SEFI NEWSLETTER

Monthly news feed about engineering education in Europe and overseas

Dear SEFI friends,

We invite you to our last newsletter of the academic year 2022-23. In SEFI, we were busy bringing you the results of the latest engineering education research as well as best practices. Now it is time to relax and prepare for another busy year. For this summer, we wish you happy holidays, some quality time spent with your close ones, and we look forward to seeing most of you in person at the SEFI 2023 Annual Conference at TU Dublin.

During July and August, we won't send newsletters and press reviews. They will be back at the beginning of September. The SEFI office will be closed from 3 to 14 July.

Yours sincerely,

SEFI HQ

Wissenschaften, Germany!

SEFI ETHICS SIG

SEFI Ethics SIG Spring School

The Spring School was the third time the SIG met in a format that allows for an in-depth exchange of knowledge and conversations on pertinent topics related to ethics, cutting-edge research, and explorations of common themes for collaboration. It was hosted this year by Madeline Polmear, Vrije University Brussels, in Brussels, Belgium, and gathered 24 participants from 11 different countries. The sessions included exploring ethics in IC and AI, emotions related to ethics in engineering education, comparisons between how ethics is taught in the post-soviet countries, as well as introducing a variety of tools and methods in teaching and researching ethics. The Spring School opened up further options for collaboration and brought a sparkle of enthusiasm among the participants.

New Episode Alert! Episode #4 is out now

We chat with Dr. Christopher Smith from Glasgow Caledonian University. As co-chair of the SEFI Special Interest Group (SIG) on Continuing Engineering Education and Lifelong Learning, Dr. Smith is an international authority on work-based learning and the design of flexible programs. In this podcast, you will discover the power of Work-Based Learning as universities and industry join forces to shape the future of engineering education. MEDIA RELEASE

The Engineering Professors’ Council (EPC) and the Royal Academy of Engineering have unveiled the Engineering Ethics Toolkit, an online resource revolutionizing engineering education. With a focus on embedding ethics throughout the curriculum, this toolkit addresses the scarcity of ethics teaching in university engineering courses. By providing interactive resources, guidance, and ready-to-use classroom materials, the Engineering Ethics Toolkit empowers educators to cultivate ethical awareness among future engineers. It positions the UK as a leader in promoting engineering as a catalyst for positive global impact, fostering responsible decision-making for a better world. MORE INFO HERE

Boosting the Green Future via University Micro-Credentials /B-Green-ED

SEFI member, Universitat Politècnica de València, hosted the second meeting of the international project "Boosting the Green Future via University Micro-Credentials" (B-Green-ED), funded by the European Union's ERASMUS+ program. During the meeting, partner universities made progress in defining micro-credential courses focused on green standards standardization in collaboration with the Romanian Standards Association and the Bulgarian Institute for Standardization. Led by Burgas Free University, the project aims to promote sustainability and environmental commitment. UPV, recognized among the top 150 universities committed to sustainability by GreenMetric, showcases its dedication to the cause.

Engineers for Europe (E4E): Enhancing Competencies and Shaping the Future of Engineering

The deadline is 30th June.

SEFI, KU Leuven, and TU Dublin are collaborating on the Erasmus+ project 'Engineers for Europe (E4E)' to empower EU engineers with new competencies and promote innovation and resilience. The project focuses on acquiring skills, knowledge, attitudes, and leadership qualities, with an emphasis on digitalization, sustainability, resilience, and entrepreneurship, aligning with the evolving demands of the job market. The project is coordinated by ENGINEERS EUROPE (formerly FEANI), and an international survey is conducted to gather engineering insights. These surveys aims to understand the future of the engineering profession in the next 5 to 10 years and its contribution to implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Valuable contributions from professionals are sought to determine priorities in developing Innovative Training in the form of micro-credentials, which will benefit engineers in Europe.

          FROM EUROPEAN UNION

As part of a recently conducted European University Association survey, more than 500 universities across Europe shared their views on and experiences with the Erasmus+ program. During this webinar (28 June, 14.00–15.00 CEST), EUA will present the first findings. The survey results will notably feed into EUA’s contribution to the European Commission’s public consultation process for the mid-term review of the Erasmus+ program. As such, the webinar will address the management of the program, responses to the priorities, and input received from the program and partner countries. Some well-known challenges of the program will be addressed, and the conversation will draw from higher education institutions’ own experiences. Registrations will remain open until the start of the webinar. Participation is free of charge and open to all EUA members, as well as anyone with an interest in the topic.
