DEANS CONVENTION

SEFI Deans Convention 2023

The 14th European Convention for Engineering Deans welcomed over 80 participants in the green campus of Twente University. The two-day program offered challenging discussions on the future of engineering education and adaptations to the new kinds of students, new digital environment, and AI.           In the latest development, key European public research and innovation representatives have expressed their support for the 'Council conclusions on high-quality, transparent, open, trustworthy, and equitable scholarly publishing.' Emphasizing the importance of scholarly knowledge as a public good, these organizations advocate for immediate and unrestricted access to publicly funded research and its outcomes without subscription fees or paywalls. They highlight that this approach is vital in advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and addressing societal challenges. The signatories call on EU member states and institutions to sustain their commitment to a scholarly communication ecosystem characterized by quality, transparency, openness, trustworthiness, and equity. They urge for active engagement with stakeholders, constructive dialogue with the public research and innovation sector, and evidence-based reforms grounded in the principles of open science.

          EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY ASSOCIATION

          The European Commission has allocated EUR 1.284 billion for two multiannual work programs under the Digital Europe Program. The primary education work program will focus on advanced digital skills, climate and environment protection technology, data, AI, and cybersecurity, with a budget of EUR 909.5 million for 2023 and 2024. The Commission has also published two proposals for Council Recommendations to support member states in providing high-quality digital education and training to develop digital skills among European citizens. The recommendations aim to help Europe achieve its 2030 targets of 80% of adults with basic digital skills and employing 20 million ICT specialists. The ACA will discuss the impact of these legal frameworks on mobility and internationalization at the national level.

          The Erasmus+ Review 2021/22 report has been released and evaluates the impact of the Erasmus+ program on promoting tolerance, modernizing the European Higher Education Area, and dealing with COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine. The report also analyzes the program's challenges, priorities, successes, and novelties and recommends improvements for its mid-term review.

          EUA had a productive year in 2022, achieving objectives for its members through the "Universities without Walls - a vision for 2030" publication. The report outlines notable efforts in research assessment reform, digital transformation, and sustainability while supporting Ukraine's higher education community during the war. EUA also learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and explored new ways of working, culminating in a successful in-person Annual Conference.
