AIS VISION: To Assist in the creation of an international learning community enriched by education, which nurtures harmony, mutual respect and understanding.

Welcome to recent new arrival students

Since our last newsletter we warmly welcome a fabulous group of students and their families from Vietnam, Philippines, China and Iran – ranging from 9 years old to 16 years old. The majority are residing with family – some with Happy Homestay – who looks after our students seeking homestay to study at AIS. Thank you to all our staff for making our new students’ learning experiences so rich and inviting. Thank you to all our Orientation team for your hard work to connect our students with class mates so skilfully and generously.

Welcome to our first Study Tour at AIS for 2023 – Vice-Principal, Middle School students and staff from Al Azhar Junior High School 1, Jakarta

It is an honour and pleasure to welcome our dear visitors to Adelaide International School last week. Ms Rosie Broderick met staff and students at Adelaide Airport on Tuesday 14 February. Wednesday 15 February our Deputy Principal, Mr Shaun Oakey and the Principal Ms Gina Kadis organised a full school assembly to celebrate the arrival of students and staff from this prestigious Jakarta Middle School to learn English and experience all South Australia has to offer international students. Special thanks to Mr Nico Suryadi, Business Development AIS (Indonesia, Adelaide-based) for his traditional welcome in Bahasa Indonesia at our Welcome to Country & Adelaide Assembly. It was very engaging and a wonderful insight into the culture of our Indonesian neighbours. Special thanks to our current Indonesian Year 12 SACE student, Yosep – for translating the Principal’s Welcome Message at Assembly. Well done to Aisen and Jasmine for speaking in assembly for the first time. Sincere and special thanks to Ms Rosie Broderick for planning and leading her first AIS study tour with distinction. Thank you to Ms Beta from the Student Guardianship Services team for supporting Ms Rosie with the homestay families throughout their stay. Special thanks to our Indonesia-based Business Development AIS staff member Ms Didi, who escorted the co-educational group of students to Australia and Adelaide International School. These opportunities allow us to achieve our AIS overriding vision. These opportunities allow us to learn about the Indonesian culture and education system and helps strengthen international education opportunities for South Australia. We look forward to our next Study Tour from Japan in a few weeks.

Sincere and generous thanks to Mr Noel Mifsud, Principal, Tatachilla Lutheran College - for so generously welcoming this study tour staff and student group on Tuesday 21 February – to share in the many rewarding educational opportunities this brilliant school offers students and families lucky to attend this school in the heart of McLaren Vale, regional South Australia. Ms Rosie will share further details in upcoming newsletters.

Our visitors enjoying Adelaide

Last week-end I was fortunate enough to visit the capital city of Australia, namely Canberra…

My visit coincided with their annual multicultural festival. The festival celebrates the cultural diversity not just of the ACT but of Australia. This year over 350 000 people attended, there were 250 stalls and over 170 cultures represented. There was cultural dancing and live music each evening, lots of different foods to try and workshops that focussed on art, traditional craft-making, learning dance steps and other unique cultural experiences. The atmosphere was electric. The gathering symbolises our great capacity as Australians to welcome people throughout the world and to celebrate our national and international identities.

The festival reminded me so much of what it is like to be an international school, where we bring together a mix of culture and nations and where we unite to express ourselves as global citizens through studying and upholding common commitments which are captured by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. At AIS everyone is included, every voice is heard and we embrace the values of mutual respect, harmony and hospitality.

Homegroup Program

I’m excited to introduce our homegroup program at AIS. We believe that creating a sense of community and belonging is essential for student success, and the homegroup program is designed to do just that.

What is Homegroup?

Homegroup is a program where students are assigned to a small group led by a homegroup teacher. These groups meet daily throughout the school year to participate in activities, discussions and community-building exercises. The goal is to create a supportive, inclusive environment where students can connect with each other and with their school community.

Why Homegroup?

At AIS, we believe that creating a sense of belonging is essential for student success. When students feel connected to their school community, they are more likely to participate in school activities, seek help when needed and feel supported in their academic and personal growth. Homegroup provides a space for students to connect with each other and with a teacher who can offer support and guidance.

How will Homegroup Benefit Students?

Homegroup has many benefits for students. It can help them develop social and emotional skills, such as communication, teamwork and empathy. It can also provide a sense of connection and belonging, which can lead to improved academic performance, increased attendance and better wellbeing outcomes.

Know More

From the Director of Teaching and Learning

Welcome to mid-term.

The first weeks have flown by, and we have achieved a great deal with new arrivals and continuing students. All new students have sat a diagnostic test to find out how well they are currently using English. We will level all students again at the end of term to measure their growth. Usually, our students grow between 1 to 2 language levels per term. Sometimes they grow more and occasionally, they plateau before their next burst of language growth. Children will develop their language here with us, it’s just a matter of how much and how fast.

We will be in contact with you if we feel there is an issue with English language learning. Please help us support your child by encouraging homework, listening to and watching English language programs and by speaking English as much as possible at home, and when you are out and about!

Our Year 11 and 12 courses have started and the students in those classes are preparing for their first summative assessment tasks. They are focussing on improving study skills and time management. Of course, they are trying to understand as much content as possible. Writing study notes, practising questions, memorising work, and solving new problems are good ways to prepare for these. Proof reading and responding to feedback from teachers is also essential to meeting personal achievement goals.

Parent teacher Interviews

Thank-you for meeting us at our first parent teacher interview of the year. This was successful and I hope you found meeting the teachers and talking about progress, helpful. If you need any more information, please contact us to make an appointment.

In Week 11 of this term, you will receive a formal written report with the grades for each subject. In addition, you will read comments from each teacher about the achievement of your child in each subject. Please expect to see your child’s report in week 11.

Teaching and Learning

In the coming weeks, there are 2 outings for students to help them learn subject content and language skills. Students will visit the State Theatre to see a play.

The second event is an excursion where students travel around Adelaide city. The EAP students will collect evidence of how green spaces lower temperatures and built areas cause pockets of urban heat in Adelaide. Their assessment is to show how well they understand create micro-climates in an urban setting in our temperate biome. Sustainability is one of our cross-curricular foci.

Homework: I remind you that homework is an expectation of the school. The amount of homework which is reasonable varies for the year level of the student with a primary student doing no more than 30 minutes and a year 12 student typically completing 3 hours or more per night.

Thank you for your support and please be in touch if you have any queries about matters relating to teaching an learning.

Ms. Phillips.
