Welcome to Nourish News - March 2023

Nourish has long been involved in advocacy for better school food. In 2021, we helped establish a Nova Scotia chapter of the Coalition for Healthy School Food; now its coordinator, Lindsay Corbin, connects and engages countless voices in the call to #NourishKidsNow. This year’s Great Big Crunch might be the biggest yet. Be sure to get involved!

In the meantime, Nourish is saying “yes” to invitations from communities and schools looking to figure out the recipe for nourishing children and youth. We’ve hired Annapolis Valley-based Jenny Osburn (co-author of the Local Food Lunch Toolkit) as a School Food Outreach Worker; she’ll be supporting professional development for food service workers this spring. In Halifax, we’re looking at options for better breakfast and more frequent lunch at three schools that don’t have cafeterias – as is the case in many schools! Many thanks to donors and our core supporters – including the Province of Nova Scotia – that enable us to embark on this work.

Finally, please join me in tuning in to what children and youth have to say about food – including through many activities throughout Nutrition Month (more below).

Warmly,

Blog: Youth Engagement in Food System Change

Youth voices are more important than ever in creating change in the food movement. We must work to break the barriers to youth involvement—including finances, land access and limited education—and open the conversation around food. Without youth participation, our food system will never reach its full potential. Let youth take a bite!

The course, developed in partnership with Heartwood, aims to support partners to better engage the energy and wisdom of young people to create school communities optimized for health and learning. Learn more about community youth development with Heartwood’s Circle of Awesomeness.
