The View from the Learning Curve

Nourish set up a table at the conference of the Teacher’s Association of Physical and Health Education on Oct. 28. It was a delight to share ideas for snacking while outdoors with students, and to give away resources that may help teachers cook in their classrooms.

One teacher asked a question that stumped me. Her scenario: her school in Digby has recently taken over its cafeteria. Her question: “Where should we get the food?”

At a provincial and federal level, the news has never been better for champions of school food. But there is so much to figure out at the school and community level – as the answer to this question will vary! Nourish is in conversation with partners including the RCEs, Mobile Food Market, Feed Nova Scotia, Farmers Markets of Nova Scotia and the Dept of Agriculture as we prepare to co-create the community-based solutions for delivering on school food.

You may have heard that PEI is ahead of Nova Scotia on this learning curve. On November 10, I’ll be hosting a conversation with the Executive Director of the PEI School Food Program Inc. to see what lessons we can learn. Please join us!

Warmly,

Nourish is located in Kwipek (so-called Bedford), part of Mi'kma'ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq peoples. While this is where our offices are located, we support food work from Unama'ki to Kespukwitk. As Treaty people, we strive to work under the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1752 by incorporating Mi'kmaw values into what we do, but recognize that we have much learning and unlearning still to do. If we can improve upon this statement, please contact us.
