Entering into Truth and Reconciliation

October features two opportunities for all to enter into Truth and Reconciliation:

Guest speaker: Deacon Pedro of Salt and Light Media

Image description

Deacon Pedro of Salt and Light media is coming to St. Joseph Church to share his first hand experiences during the delegation of indigenous persons to Rome last April and the Pope's visit to Canada last July. He will also discuss some background into what led to these two historic events.

Hear about his experience in the church hall on Friday, October 21st at 6:30pm.

Have a question for him about Truth and Reconciliation or his experiences? Ask it here and Deacon Pedro will work to incorporate an answer into his sharing.

Online learning - 'Just get over it'

Image description

Open for everyone, the First Peoples House of Learning of Trent University will offer an online learning opportunity they've entitled, 'Just get over it'. The Diocese of Peterborough offers this for all as part of a fulfillment of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission:

TRC #59. We call upon church parties to the Settlement Agreement to develop
ongoing education strategies to ensure that their respective congregations
learn about their church's role in colonization, the history and legacy of
residential schools, and why apologies to former residential school students,
their families, and communities were necessary.

O God, to whom every human power is subject, Grant to your servant His Majesty the King success in the exercise of his high office, so that, always revering to you and striving to please you, he may constantly secure and preserve for the people entrusted to his care the freedom that comes from civil peace.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit God, forever and ever, Amen

Reflect on the Gospel

Image description

Each Thursday after the 8am Mass, a Gospel Reflection group, guided by Fr. Darlington, reflects on the Gospel for the upcoming week. It's a great way to get ready for the Sunday Mass, learn more about our Faith and listen for God's Good News. It's also a great place to meet others from our parish and share how the Gospel message can be lived out daily.

All are Welcome. There's even complimentary coffee, tea and snacks.

St. Joseph Church is in need of counters on Tuesday mornings to help count the Sunday Collection. Please contact the parish office if interested

Join the Disciples

of Saint Joseph Church

Our church grows when disciples serve. After all, how could the generous gift of time and talent combined with the guidance of the Holy Spirit do anything but bear real and truly good fruit? Over the next week, please pray about how you may be called to serve in our church. Regardless of your skills, education, capacities, blessings or limitations, you have something to offer!

If, after prayerful consideration you discern you are called to serve, please visit the website to see different way you might serve and share your intention. Disciples serve, not just to help churches out but to encounter God and to share his love.

Feast of St Francis of Assisi - Tuesday, October 4

Image description

On Tuesday, October 4, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, who saw God’s love in everything God has created. Francis was born into a wealthy family in Assisi, Italy, sometime around 1181. One day, while Francis prayed in an old church, he heard God speaking to him: “Francis, repair my church.” Francis set out to fix the building, using some of his dad’s money. That made his father angry, and he dragged Francis to the bishop, saying Francis was stealing. But Francis was inspired by God to begin a new life. He realized he didn’t need money or worldly goods. He took off his clothes and handed them to his dad. (The shocked bishop quickly gave Francis an old brown robe to wear!) Francis now understood that it wasn’t a church building that needed repairing. God’s Church was his people, and they needed help.

Francis began preaching about the joy of God’s love. He cared for the sick and suffering. He owned nothing, joyfully trusting that God would provide everything he needed. Others joined him, and they became known as Franciscans. Today, Franciscan friars, brothers, sisters, and laypeople still care for God’s people and creation, just as Francis did.

We are all called to bless and care for God’s creation. That doesn’t mean just animals. In springtime, many farmers ask God’s blessings on their seeds. At harvest time, we often thank God for the blessings of our food. And every day, we bless and care for people. Look around you, at the people, places, and things that God has made.

How will you bless and care for these amazing gifts today?

Life Chain 2022

Sunday, October 2nd, 2-3pm

Corner of Bowmanville Ave. and King St.

Life Chain is held simultaneously in more than 200 locations across Canada each year. Life Chain is an easy way to join others in peacefully expressing our belief in the sanctity of life. Participants simply stand on the sidewalk with others. The organizer will provide a non-graphic sign to hold, and you may pray silently for an end to abortion and for those affected by it. Feel free to bring a chair, a coffee and good spirits.

As we end the Season on Creation, let’s pray for social and environmental justice…

The Season of Creation, which lasts from September 1 to October 4, is a time for the global Christian family to unite in prayer and action for the Earth, our shared home. This year, in the face of continuing environmental destruction, Development and Peace’s People and Planet First campaign will continue - seeking to ensure that Canada and Canadian corporations are not complicit in any violations of the rights of the people and the planet while operating abroad.

To learn more about the campaign and to pray and act for the preservation of Creation, visit Development and Peace’s website, www.devp.org/en . There, you will find a multitude of resources to help you live the Season of Creation to the fullest and to mobilize for putting people and planet first. Especially take a look at our compilation of prayers celebrating the Earth and invoking its protection!

Caring for our brothers and sisters means caring for the home we share. This responsibility is “essential to a life of virtue”

Pope Francis, (Laudato Si’ 217)
