We are on a mission to inspire every child in Nova Scotia to eat, enjoy and value food that fuels healthier people and a healthier environment.

We believe our young people are the key to igniting this transformation.

Back to School, Back to School Food

It is September — the true New Year for families with school-age children, and an expensive one at that. School supplies, clothes and shoes, extracurricular activity fees, and the grocery bill will doubtless add up to more this year than last.

Currently, Canada is the only G7 country without a National School Food Program; federally, both the Minister of Agriculture and the Minister of Social Development have school food on their to-do lists. That doesn’t change the facts for this school year in Nova Scotia, where we know that children will need healthy food at school and that school food budgets will be tighter than ever due to inflation.

That's why we have created the Nova Scotia School Food Fund. Working with our public education partners, we will distribute the funds to schools according to enrolment numbers and need. We thank Nova Scotians in advance for contributing via our website.

Warmly,

A Look Back at Summer

Smiling child working on a brainstorming activity at a summer camp

It was a busy and fun summer for Nourish! We developed new resources for schools and families, filmed recipe videos, promoted the Nourish Food & Film Challenge and held food literacy workshops at select summer camps where we made some delicious tabbouleh. Keep an eye out for new and exciting things coming down the pipeline this fall!

Thanks to YWCA Halifax and Discovery Centre Sprouting Science Camp for hosting us as guest workshop presenters, and thank you to generous volunteers Nancy and Memoona who took time out of their summer to help us film recipe videos!

Did you know that the Nourish Your Roots Community online store is open NOW until September 22? Buy a box of farm-fresh produce and pick up at select community locations, or donate a box and Nourish will deliver it to a community partner who works with individuals and families in need. Funds raised support Nova Scotia school food programs.

Not able to participate in the Community Campaign? Contact one of the 93 participating schools across the province to find out when their box sales begin!*

*School sales begin Sept 23; selling and pickup dates vary by school.

Speak Up for School Food

As schools reopen this week, school food programs will be crucial to the health and wellbeing of children and youth. With the increased cost of food, it is more important than ever that the federal government honour their commitment to a national school food program.

Your voice matters! Urge your MP, regardless of political party, to support a timely investment in school food at the link below.

Nourish is located in Kwipek (so-called Bedford), part of Mi'kma'ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq peoples. While this is where our offices are located, we support food work from Unama'ki to Kespukwitk. As Treaty people, we strive to work under the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1752 by incorporating Mi'kmaw values, like cooperation, stewardship of nature and sharing, into what we do, but recognize that we have much learning and unlearning still to do. If we can improve upon this statement, please contact us.
