Webinar: Feline Infectious Peritonitis- Diagnostic Challenges in Practice

The free class “Continuous learning with Bioguard” theme for this month will be conducted on May 25th. hosted by Dr. Yung-Tsun Lo, DVM, Ph.D. and , an expert in virology, molecular biology, and clinical microbiology at Bioguard Corporation.

Image description

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by the infection of feline coronavirus. Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal. Diagnosis of FIP remains challenging and typically is the combination of signalment, clinical signs, and diagnostic aids that will help the clinician to obtain a diagnosis. In some cases, the diagnosis can be elusive and may depend on the logical exclusion of other possibilities. Overall, prompt diagnosis of FIP is not only important for disease management, but also for better quality of life of the infected cat.

Importance of Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) Testing

Image description

Unlike some forms of viruses that infect cells and then kill them, FeLV and FIV actually alter the genetic material of the infected cell and turn cells into little virus factories. This process takes time, so in both cases, cats may be infected for many years before becoming clinically ill.

FeLV and FIV in cats are serious and unfortunately incurable diseases. Therefore, FIV and FeLV status of every cat at risk of infection should be known. Cats should be tested as soon as possible after they are acquired, following exposure to an infected cat or a cat of unknown infection status, prior to vaccination against FeLV or FIV, and whenever clinical illness occurs.

VETlabs Feline leukemia Virus (FeLV) Ag/ Feline immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) Ab Combo Test is a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay, developed by Bioguard Corporation for enabling the simplicity of rapidly testing or detecting the feline leukemia virus antigen and feline immunodeficiency Virus antibody in cat’s blood.

Rivalta test for Feline infectious peritonitis diagnosis

Image description

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important disease of domestic cats. It occurs worldwide in cats of all ages, but the disease is most common in young cats less than two years of age. Although FIP is not a particularly common disease, it is important because once a cat develops the disease, the outcome is almost invariably fatal.

FIP is caused by the infection of feline coronavirus. Infection with coronavirus is actually very common in cats, but most of the time it does not cause any problems, other than perhaps mild self-limiting diarrhea. Uncommonly, the virus mutates (changes) to a strain of coronavirus which has the potential to cause disease. This mutated strain is the cause of FIP. Two main forms of the disease are known as ‘wet’ or ‘effusive’ disease, and ‘dry’ or ‘non-effusive’ disease. Many cats may in fact have a mix of these two types.

Bioguard’s “Peritonitis Detection Kit”, a Rivalta test, is a very simple, inexpensive method that does not require special laboratory equipment and can be performed easily in private practice for the diagnosis of wet form FIP. The high protein content and high concentrations of fibrin and inflammatory mediators lead to a positive reaction.

Prompt diagnosis of cats infected with FIP play an important role in management of the diseases.
