Canada's Federal Budget 2022 included a statement confirming the government's commitment to develop a National School Food Policy and explore how more Canadian children can receive nutritious food at school.

We are hopeful that a financial commitment in line with the Liberal's pre-election promise of $1 billion over 5 years will be confirmed in budget 2023 or sooner. Over the next year, the advocacy efforts of the Nova Scotia Advisory to the Coalition for Healthy School Food (NS-CHSF) will focus on the need for consultation to inform a universal policy and program that will address the needs of every child in every school.

Your ongoing support will be essential as we move forward in this work. Please stay tuned for ways that you can get involved in the coming months.

From the 2022 Budget:

National School Food Policy, page 190

Ensuring that the most vulnerable children have the healthy, nutritious food they need to grow and learn is vitally important. However, nearly two million children in Canada are at risk of going to school hungry on any given day.

Over the next year, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and the Minister of Families, Children and Social Development will work with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous partners, and stakeholders to develop a National School Food Policy and to explore how more Canadian children can receive nutritious food at school.
