Diagnose Lyme infection and three other vector-borne diseases with the Bioguard VLabs 4X

Image description

Lyme disease is a bacterial illness that can be transmitted to humans, dogs, and other animals by certain species of ticks. It is caused by the spiral-shaped bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi that is carried inside a tick and gets into a dog or person’s bloodstream through a tick bite. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can travel to different parts of the body and cause problems in specific organs or locations, such as joints, as well as overall illness.

The signs of Lyme disease vary. Many animals can have Lyme disease and show no signs. In dogs, the most common signs include fever, loss of appetite, painful or swollen joints, lameness that comes and goes, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy. If Lyme disease is left untreated it can lead to damage in the kidneys, nervous system, and heart.

Prompt diagnosis of dogs infected with B. burgdorferi plays an important role in treatment and prevention of the disease.

Rapid tests are most commonly used to diagnose Lyme disease in dogs for clinics. Bioguard VLabs 4X, a 4-in-1 rapid test kit, can simultaneously detect antibodies against B. burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, A. platys, Ehrlichia canis, and antigen of Dirofilaria immitis. The test requires neither special equipment nor training. The test can use specimen of serum, plasma or whole blood, and interpret test results within 5-10 minutes.

Bioguard Feline Blood Typing Test

Image description

The blood types of cats are composed mainly of A, B, and AB. Type A is the most common, type B is rarer, and type AB is rarest. Type A red blood cells express N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), type B red blood cells express N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), and type AB red blood cells express both Neu5Gc and Neu5Ac. Understanding feline blood types is important because, unlike other mammals, cats produce naturally occurring antibodies, called alloantibodies, against the red blood cell antigens not present in their cells. Bioguard’s “Feline Blood Typing Kit” is a card typing system based on the agglutination reaction to identify the blood types of cats.

FDA seeks details on antimicrobial use, resistance in companion animals

Image description

Food and Drug Administration officials want help collecting data on how antimicrobial administration to companion animals affects development of drug resistance.

A Feb. 15 announcement from the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine indicates the FDA needs to better understand how drug use in animals such as dogs, cats, and horses might impact antimicrobial resistance in pathogens of animals and people.

Details on the request for comments are available at www.regulations.gov under docket number FDA-2021-N-1305. Comments are due June 16.

A Federal Register notice published Feb. 16 says FDA CVM officials want descriptions on how practices of antimicrobial use in companion animals may affect resistance development among bacterial pathogens of companion animals and of humans. Officials want to learn about concerns regarding resistance development related to particular antimicrobials or antimicrobial drug classes administered to companion animals, as well as how the importance of a drug to human medicine should be considered in decisions about whether to administer the drug to companion animals.
