The free class “Continuous learning with Bioguard” theme for this month will be conducted on 25th May 2022; hosted by Dr. Yung-Tsun Lo, DVM, Ph.D., a veterinary expert at Bioguard Corporation and an expert in virology, immunology, molecular biology, and clinical microbiology.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is caused by the infection of feline coronavirus. Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal. Diagnosis of FIP remains challenging and typically is the combination of signalment, clinical signs, and diagnostic aids that will help the clinician to obtain a diagnosis. In some cases, the diagnosis can be elusive and may depend on the logical exclusion of other possibilities. Overall, prompt diagnosis of FIP is not only important for disease management, but also for a better quality of life for the infected cat.

FDA Approves Novel Treatment to Control Pain in Cats with Osteoarthritis, First Monoclonal Antibody Drug for Use in Any Animal Species

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Solensia (frunevetmab injection), the first treatment for the control of pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats, and the first monoclonal antibody (mAb) new animal drug approved by the FDA for use in any animal species.

Frunevetmab, the active ingredient in Solensia, is a cat-specific monoclonal antibody (a type of protein) designed to recognize and attach to a protein called nerve growth factor (NGF) that is involved in the regulation of pain. When frunevetmab binds to NGF, it prevents the pain signal from reaching the brain.

“Treatment options for cats with osteoarthritis are very limited. Advancements in modern veterinary medicine have been instrumental in extending the lives of many animals, including cats. But with longer lives come chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis,” said Steven M. Solomon, M.P.H., D.V.M., director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine. “Today’s approval marks the first treatment option to help provide relief to cats that are suffering from this condition and may significantly improve their quality of life. We also hope that today’s approval of the first monoclonal antibody by the FDA for any animal species will expand research and development of other monoclonal antibody products to treat animal diseases.”

Importance of Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) Ag Test Testing

Image description

Canine distemper is a transmissible and severe disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.

Puppies and dogs most frequently become infected through airborne exposure (through sneezing or coughing) to the virus from an infected dog or other infected wild animals. Shared food and water bowls and equipment are the other sources of viral transmission. Infected dogs can shed the virus for many months, and mother dogs can pass the virus through the placenta to their newly born.

For the rapid and qualitative detection of Canine Distemper Virus in dog ocular and nasal discharge, a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay named Bioguard Canine Distemper Virus (CDV) Ag Test is developed and manufactured by Bioguard Corporation.

Giardia (GIA) Ag Test for Feline Giardia infection diagnosis

Image description

Giardiasis is a parasitic disease that occurs when cats eat, drink, or smell something that is contaminated by Giardia duodenalis, a tiny single-celled parasite that infects the small intestines of its host animal.

The severity of the disease is variable, but it can cause serious illness in some infected cats. Giardiasis is highly contagious among young kittens, adult cats that have weakened immune systems, and cats in close living conditions.

Giardia can be hard to diagnose because Giardiasis symptoms may be indicative of several other medical conditions. Therefore, to ensure the right diagnosis, Bioguard Corporation has developed and manufactured Bioguard Giardia (GIA) Ag Test assay kit for the rapid and qualitative detection of GIA in cat feces.
