O God of truth and justice,
we hold before you those whose memory we cherish,
and those whose names we will never know.
Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past,
may we put our faith in your future;
for you are the source of life and hope,
now and for ever. Amen.

Freedom is not free

I watched our flag pass by one day, it fluttered in the breeze,

A young soldier saluted it and then he stood at ease.

I looked at him in uniform, so young, so tall, so proud,

With hair cut square and eyes alert, a patriot in the crowd.

I thought, how many men like him had fallen through the years,

How many dies on foreign soil? How many mother's tears?

How many pilot's planes shot down? How many died at sea?

How many fox holes a soldiers grave? "Freedom is not free!"

I heard the "Last Post" sound one night, when everything was still,

I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.

I wondered just how many times the "Last Post" meant "Amen",

When our flag had draped a casket of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children, of mothers and of wives,

Of father's, sons and husbands, with interrupted lives.

I thought about the grave yard at the bottom of the sea,

And our "Unknown Soldier" in Ottawa, "Freedom is not free!"

Saturday - Can you Help?

Message on Synod

by

+Most Reverend Bishop Miehm

Image description

Pope Francis has announced that in preparation for the next Synod of Bishops, there will be a worldwide conversation in the Church or a "synod" about community, engaged participation, and the mission of evangelization. This conversation will follow a two-year path and involve the People of God - everyone, everywhere. All are invited to join in prayer as we begin this synodal conversation and unite it with the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Process.

Through a survey inviting input from all the People of God, an ongoing conversation will help form pastoral priorities within our Church.

Help out and have your say by participating in the survey

Join the conversation!

Pope Francis also hopes that the synod will inspire conversation and discussion over some topics and challenges relevant to the life of the Church in the world today. For each of the next eight weeks, all are invited to join the discussion online by contributing to three questions that change week to week.

This week's synod questions...

Who is part of the Church?

Are any persons or groups left on the margins, expressly or in fact?

How do we listen to the laity, especially to young people and women, to consecrated men and women, to the minorities, or to the excluded?

Some great news for our nation & Church!

The Holy Father has accepted the invitation of the Bishops of Canada to visit the Church in Canada in the context of a pilgrimage of healing and reconciliation with our Indigenous sisters and brothers.

See the Vatican News Release

It's been nearly twenty years since the Holy Father last made a visit to Canada. So, this is an exciting moment for our nation! We also pray that this visit will guide our efforts in seeking reconciliation with indigenous communities of Canada.

Please keep in your thoughts and prayers...

those who have died, especially...
Eddy Al-Makdesy
Christopher Montgomery
Kaye Ellies
Howie Methot
and Gerard van den Wildenberg

and those who are sick, especially...
Ruth Lawson

John Lawson

Pat Pantin
Yvonne Herdsman
Margaret Jamieson
Kelly Smigielski
Mary Hofbauer

Jesus, Our Lord, we ask you to have mercy on all who are sick. Give them your strength and love and help them carry this cross with faith. May their sufferings be one with yours, overcome the power of evil and lead others to our Father in Heaven. Lord Jesus, hear our prayer, for you are Lord forever and ever. Amen.
