Development & Peace

Let’s listen to the voices of our brothers and sisters fighting for their right to a healthy environment

Image description

Thank you to our Parishioners who have already signed the petition provided by Development and Peace to request that the Canadian Government introduce legislation to ensure that Canadian Companies who become involved in the Global South be ethically and environmentally accountable and responsible to those living on the land. You may sign after al Masses and the back of the Church and downstairs in the Parish Hall or online at www.devp.org

World leaders have gathered for the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26). Although these powerful decision-makers are debating the future of the planet, they are probably too far removed from the realities of its most vulnerable people. It is up to us to hear and amplify the voices of those who are defending their rights and the environment against economic ravage.

Medarda Hernandez, whose community in Honduras has been repeatedly harmed by large industrial projects, including supposedly “green” projects, says, “if other extractivist projects start in our community, we are not going to let them pass. I ask the international community to come to our aid, because we are really suffering from this situation.”

So that people like Medarda do not go unheard, let’s make Canadian companies operating abroad responsible for protecting human and environmental rights. Join Development and Peace’s People and Planet First campaign to make this happen. Visit https://devp.org/en to learn more.

Put your empties to good use

Empties can be put into the collection box found at the rear of our church beneath the red stairs any time.

Vivat Jesus and God Bless.

Each year, the Knights of Columbus give thousands of dollars away to different charities and special needs. Much of what is given comes from an ongoing bottle collection program that everyone can participate in.

Knowing how this program helps many, the Knights of Columbus are grateful to all those who support this effort especially during the challenges of the past year when some traditional sources of revenue have been interrupted. A single bottle may not seem like a lot, but every bit of assistance helps sponsor worthy causes.

New Diocese of Peterborough Vaccine Policy for Clergy, Staff, Vendors and Volunteers

Image description

The official position of the Catholic Church is that there is no moral or ethical problems with the COVID vaccines available to Canadians. Recognizing our call to care for the common good, Pope Francis has also encouraged all Catholics to be vaccinated.

Following the directions of the Provincial Government and under the guidance of health units and medical professionals, the Diocese of Peterborough has released a COVID Vaccination Policy for clergy, staff, vendors and volunteers. In short, all clergy, staff, vendors and volunteers must be fully vaccinated or provide a weekly negative COVID rapid test before fulfilling their ministry. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion must be fully vaccinated.

This policy is temporary and does not apply to those who come to our church to worship or pray.

Those who serve our parish as volunteers are asked to send a copy of their vaccination receipt to the parish office as soon as possible. Copies of receipts can be left in the collection or in the mail slot of the parish office (in an envelope) or a picture of a receipt can be emailed to the office.

Submitted receipts are kept confidential and will be destroyed once the policy is no longer in effect.

At a discussion last week for those who serve our parish as volunteers, Fr. Craig explained the policy further and answered questions.

Find the policy on the COVID 19 webpage.

Message on Synod

by

+Most Reverend Bishop Miehm

Image description

Pope Francis has announced that in preparation for the next Synod of Bishops, there will be a worldwide conversation in the Church or a "synod" about community, engaged participation, and the mission of evangelization. This conversation will follow a two-year path and involve the People of God - everyone, everywhere. All are invited to join in prayer as we begin this synodal conversation and unite it with the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Process.

Through a survey inviting input from all the People of God, an ongoing conversation will help form pastoral priorities within our Church.

Help out and have your say by participating in the survey

Join the conversation!

Pope Francis also hopes that the synod will inspire conversation and discussion over some topics and challenges relevant to the life of the Church in the world today. For each of the next eight weeks, all are invited to join the discussion online by contributing to three questions that change week to week.

This week's synod questions...

Who is part of the Church?

Are any persons or groups left on the margins, expressly or in fact?

How do we listen to the laity, especially to young people and women, to consecrated men and women, to the minorities, or to the excluded?

Have some thoughts?

Some great news for our nation & Church!

The Holy Father has accepted the invitation of the Bishops of Canada to visit the Church in Canada in the context of a pilgrimage of healing and reconciliation with our Indigenous sisters and brothers.

See the Vatican News Release

It's been nearly twenty years since the Holy Father last made a visit to Canada. So, this is an exciting moment for our nation! We also pray that this visit will guide our efforts in seeking reconciliation with indigenous communities of Canada.

Please keep in your thoughts and prayers...

those who have died, especially...
Eddy Al-Makdesy, Kaye Ellies
Christopher Montgomery, Msgr. John Wannamaker
and Gerard van den Wildenberg

and those who are sick, especially...
Eddie Kolodziejcak,
Margaret Jamieson, Michael Boyd Jr.
John and Ruth Lawson, Pat Pantin
and Yvonne Herdsman

Jesus, Our Lord, we ask you to have mercy on all who are sick. Give them your strength and love and help them carry this cross with faith. May their sufferings be one with yours, overcome the power of evil and lead others to our Father in Heaven. Lord Jesus, hear our prayer, for you are Lord forever and ever. Amen.
