How Can You Rescue a Project from BTT-Writer?

Greetings, tech support personnel all around the world! Here's another update for you from John Wood, with the Tech Advance Help Desk!

When a project in BTT-Writer is damaged, or when the device the project is on is damaged, how can we save the translation?

The answer to this question varies depending upon whether the project is on an Android tablet or a PC of some kind.

The first thing, though, is to understand how BTT-Writer handles your translation data. When we transfer projects from one device to another, we usually use .tstudio project files to do it. These are the files created by (1) the automatic backups performed by BTT-Writer and (2) the option to Export to Project File in BTT-Writer.

Unfortunately, sometimes BTT-Writer isn't able to create this type of file for a project. Sometimes, it's because there's a problem with the project. Sometimes, it's a problem with the computer. Sometimes, it's even a problem with the user or technician! However it happens, sometimes we just can't get a project file to transfer to another device properly.

The good news is that there's another way to get to the translation data. BTT-Writer doesn't actually use the project file format when you're making a translation. Instead, the data is stored in what we call the happy path for data. While you are using BTT-Writer, the program is constantly saving your progress here, making it possible to get at that important translation if somehow you can't get a project file to work.

The Happy Path for Data

The happy path for data (hpfd) is different for each kind of device.

Android

On Android, the hpfd is in your Internal Storage in a folder at the root level((the root level is the most basic level of storage, that contains everything else)) in a folder called BTT-Writer

Inside the BTT-Writer folder is a folder called translations. This folder contains the actual translation work, each project stored in a folder named like x1_xx2_text_xx3, where x1 is the language code, xx2 is the code for the book, and xx3 is usually reg, for a regular translation project. (It can also be ULB — it makes no difference for the content.)

Windows

On Windows, the hpfd is most easily found by going to %localappdata%\BTT-Writer. Then, the translations are in a folder called targetTranslations.

Linux

On Linux, go to ~/.config/BTT-Writer and find the translations in the targetTranslations folder.

Mac

On a Mac, the hpfd is found at ~/Library/Application Support/BTT-Writer and the translations are in a folder called targetTranslations.

Now what?

After you have copied the project folders from the targetTranslations folder (or translations on Android) you can copy them into the targetTranslations folder on your own computer to upload or whatever needs to be done. You can also zip them and send them to Tech Advance if there's a problem with the project that needs the attention of a more experienced technician.
