Join us as we raise awareness on the topic of suicide in a virtual
discussion beginning with a brief presentation by Beth Harrington of our
local Suicide Prevention and Crisis Services. Additional guests, Peer
Advocate Larry Albro of Mental Health Association, NAMI NYS Family
Advocate, Roy Ettere, and Jason Hungerford, Support Group facilitator and Family Advocate for NAMI FL, will share how suicide has had an impact on them. Matthew Shapiro of NAMI NYS will discuss the upcoming 9-8-8 implementation and advocacy efforts for adoption of Nicole's Law.

Research shows that discussion and awareness around the topic of suicide can reduce the risk. Let's work together to end the stigma as we explore the many aspects of suicide. We'll learn how to get help from local crisis
services, what challenges exist, honor the experience of those we've
lost and those left behind, and a new approach coming with the 9-8-8
Crisis model in Summer of 2022.

Registration is required at bit.ly/namifl-oneconversation

As we recognize Suicide Prevention Awareness Month this September, we know the aftermath of a suicide attempt can be a challenging, painful and confusing time for both the individual and their family. Dealing with health insurance bills can make this time even more difficult. NAMI recently released a report to help individuals and families navigate health insurance after a suicide attempt.

The report, Navigating Health Insurance Following a Suicide Attempt, outlines existing federal legal protections and limitations for coverage of injuries related to a suicide attempt. The report also provides a guide for what can be done if insurance coverage is denied. The report was created in collaboration with researchers from the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy. It covers:

  • Federal legal protections in place that ensure most health insurance plans will pay for medical care resulting from a suicide attempt
  • Limitations for coverage of injuries related to a suicide attempt
  • Insurance coverage gaps that may leave people vulnerable to unexpected medical bills

We encourage you to share this resource widely and with any members of your community that may be dealing with a denial of coverage. You can find NAMI’s news item on the report’s release here.

Additionally, if you are aware of anyone who has experienced denial of coverage or unexpected medical bills and is willing to share their story, they can do so here. These stories power our advocacy by helping us identify ways we can address system gaps that harm people with mental health conditions and their families.
