SEFI 2021 Annual Conference

Blended Learning in Engineering Education: challenging, enlightening – and lasting?
13-16 September 2021 - online

Organizers of the SEFI 2021, along with the SEFI Board of directors, have made the decision to change the conference to an online event. The conference fees will be the same as last year FYI.

The call for abstracts is closed now and the date to submit the full papers is 30 April.

SEFI Ethics Webinar: Film and fiction in engineering (ethics) education

Thursday, 22 April 2021 3pm – 5pm CEST – online - register here

This seminar aims to create a discussion amongst the participants of the pros and cons of using film and fiction in engineering ethics education. It will also provide examples of film and fiction that can be used to teach engineering ethics – and participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own examples of using film and fiction to share.

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION

European Journal of Engineering Education just published its April issue!

We are delighted to announce that the April issue of our Journal has just been published and will be sent in the upcoming days!

It contains a systematic literature review of grit and one of the roles of early career engineers. Two papers address ethics education, one discussing best practices and another about the first-year experience of students in electrical engineering, and of male blue-collar mature students. There is a paper on using adaptive comparative judgement in design projects. Finally, an exciting study of academic recruitment - investigating the requirements regarding research, teaching and other merits such as industry experience.

SEFI EU PROJECTS

A-Step 2030 - 6th transnational meeting

The 6th Transnational Project Meeting of the A-STEP 2020 project, initially planned at Aalborg University in Denmark, will take place online on the 15th and 16th April, 2021. The objective of this meeting is to discuss the results of recently completed studies on applied pedagogy for teaching sustainable development in engineering schools in Europe.

New PhDs in Engineering Education graduated from TU Dublin

Technological University Dublin and its CREATE research group are delighted to announce the graduation of two new PhDs in EER, Dr. Una Beagon and Dr. Diana Adela Martin.

Una produced A Phenomenographic Study of Academics Teaching on Engineering Programmes in Ireland: Conceptions of Professional Skills and Approaches to Teaching Professional Skills. (Read the abstract, or the whole thesis) Una was supervised by Prof. Brian Bowe, TU Dublin; and she currently serves as Assistant Head of School in Civil and Structural Engineering at TU Dublin and is the 2020 recipient of the SEFI Maffioli Award

Diana’s thesis is titled Towards a Sociotechnical Reconfiguration of Engineering and an Education for Ethics: A Critical Realist Investigation into the Patterns of Education and Accreditation of Ethics in Engineering Programmes in Ireland. (Read the abstract or the whole thesis) (supervisory/examination team: Eddie Conlon, Brian Bowe, Kevin O’Rourke, Carl Mitcham). Diana has started a postdoctoral research position at TU Eindhoven where she will be able to build upon this work.

2021 ABET Symposium

14-16 April 2021 - online This is the premier ABET accreditation conference of the year with pre-conference workshops on April 12-13. I go every year so that I can stay on top of all the changes. In addition to great speakers, there will be discussion sessions and town halls. You can register at the ABET website.

IEM Conference: Breaking down Industry 4.0

During the past 5th and 6th of March, ESTIEM (European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management) organized the event “IEM Conference: Breaking down Industry 4.0”. This online event aimed to bring closer students, professors, universities and companies, and counted with the presence of over 200 participants.

During the event there were sessions with big names from companies and associations, including SEFI.

During the morning of the 6th, SEFI professors Rossella Pozzi, Gareth Thomson, Bill Reddington and Klara Kövesi got together in a Panel Discussion to share their views and experiences on digitalisation in Education. In the afternoon, Klara Kövesi joined representatives from the associations AIM and EPIEM for a roundtable to discuss the current gap between what students, universities and companies want, when it comes to engineering education."

European Commission adopted the first strategic plan for Horizon Europe, the new EU research and innovation programme worth €95.5 billion in current prices.
