NAMI Statement on Law Enforcement Pepper Spraying a 9-yr-old Girl During a Crisis Call

Arlington, Va. — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) today released a statement from CEO Daniel H. Gillison, Jr, on the handcuffing and pepper-spraying of a nine-year-old girl in Rochester, New York, last Friday by local law enforcement professionals after a crisis call regarding “family trouble.”:“When a mental health crisis happens, it should get a mental health response.

Black Mental Health Matters- February is Black History Month

February is Black History Month, during which we honor and give focus to individuals and organizations in the Black community who have made an impact and a difference in our lives, our communities and in our world.
To truly honor Black lives, we must understand and acknowledge the intersection of race and mental health.

NAMI CEO, Daniel Gillison, Jr. reminds us that “The effect of racism and racial trauma on mental health is real and cannot be ignored. The disparity in access to mental health care in communities of color cannot be ignored. The inequality and lack of cultural competency in mental health treatment cannot be ignored." And, "Racism is a public health crisis."

At NAMI Finger Lakes, we know there is much work to do to provide support, education and advocacy that improves lives in the diverse community we serve.

Overcoming the barriers to talking about and seeking treatment for mental health conditions in the Black community can be an overwhelming challenge. Finding proper care that meets the needs of individuals of diverse experiences is imperative to moving into recovery. Unapologetic Guide To Black Mental Health

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions.

It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.

NAMI Family-to-Family is taught by NAMI-trained family members who
have been there, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive
exercises.
